pandanus exchange
The “marata” (pandanus fruit) was stacked against the wall of the house. They would later stack it on a platform before giving it formally to their inlaws with which they have an exchange relationship. They were given a large gift of “karuka” (a tasty food that grows at high elevations) which they don’t have on their land and in return they are giving these pandanus fruit which their in laws don’t grow.
